Evolution is Not Random

There’s a new paper out that finds that evolution is not random.  They looked at the vulvas of roundworms from nearly 50 different species and found that evolution is not random, but deterministic.

For example, they concluded that the number of cell divisions needed in vulva development declined over time — instead of randomly increasing and decreasing. In addition, the team noted that the number of rings used to form the vulva consistently declined during the evolutionary process. These results demonstrate that, even where we might expect evolution to be random, it is not.

So, strip away the randomness of evolution and you are left with a directed function.  A directed function is indicative of a designer.  This is clearly work that lends support to ID science and flies in the face of evolution.  Of course, the Darwinista will spin it a different way, but I don’t think many will be fooled by their propaganda and dishonest rhetoric.

    As usual, you get a distorted picture about the results of a scientific study if you just read a press release. Here it the original article: doi:10.1016/j.cub.2007.10.061 . Note the following passage:

    Two different patterns of evolutionary change are expected. (1) Unbiased changes would produce a variety of character states, as well as reversals back to an ancestral state. (2) If changes are biased, only a subset of several possible character states may be found, and reversals would be rare. Two kinds of processes are likely to be responsible for these patterns. (1) Unbiased patterns are expected if the predominant process is stochastic, i.e., if the evolution of a character is limited neither by selection nor by other constraints. (2) Biased patterns are likely if deterministic processes (either selection or selection-independent constraints) predominate. Note that evolution under selection or other constraints may have stochastic aspects, like mutation or genetic drift, but is still considered deterministic and is likely to produce biases, such as irreversibility. (emphasis mine –O.T.)

    In a nutshell, evolution consists of two parts: changes are generated through random mutations, the resulting organisms are then subjected to nonrandom bias from environment.
    The simplest mathematical model of that is a random walker acted upon by an external force. In the absence of the force, the random walker ends on the left or the right of the initial point with equal probabilities. But if the force is strong enough, the walker will be drifting in one direction with small fluctuations on top of the drift. The authors refer to these limits as deterministic and stochastic. The presence of a drift does not exclude the random part.

    Evolution is neither completely random nor totally deterministic: it has both of these components. Strange that it’s news to you.

    Nice try, but too bad for you your mental gymnastics will not carry the day. You want to claim that evolution is both random and deterministic? Make up your mind. When confronted with the reality that evolution is deterministic, you have to distort reality to make it fit into your materialistic worldview where everything happens randomly and can not allow any trace of teleology. You find that evolution does not follow your preconceived biases, so you go into a state of cognitive dissonance, admit it but somehow it still strengthens your pet theory? If nothing can falsify evolution or count as evidence against it, then it is not scientific, nor is useful to anyone. Again, you show that you are nothing but a dogmatist and a follower of a particular worldview and quite unable to see things from any other angle.
