I happened to watch Contact the other day which really is a good movie. It brings up some serious scientific questions. Foremost for me is the question of design detection. How did the characters infer design?
Admittedly it is a fictitious example, but I think that just about everyone faced with the same scenario would also infer design. We even have SETI looking for such patterns. The interesting part is that materialists will tell you that ID science is wrong, because we can not do design detection without knowing the identity of the designer. In Contact, however, we find that the characters did not know the identity of the designer, yet were able to detect the design anyway. So, something is amiss here. If we were to receive a similar transmission from space – with encoded plans for a machine – would materialists insist that it must be natural?
